When your conscious mind and subconscious mind work together, you can take full control of your life and achieve anything you want to.

If you want to create wealth and happiness in your life, you need to train your sub conscious mind (sometimes known as your subjective mind) as this is where the negative thoughts and beliefs that hold you back originate from.

In this article, I'll share:

  • The true power of your subconscious mind and how it affects every part of your life
  • How subconscious mind and conscious mind working in sync can dramatically improve anyone's everyday life and their personal and professional development
  • The three approaches you should take to reprogram your conscious mind
  • What happened to me when I decided to train my subconscious mind .

Your own subconscious mind and how you use it

Our brain requires a lot of energy to work. So, when we do something more energy-intensive like think or concentrate on something, our brain over time devises strategies to reduce the amount of energy we use.

The most effective way our brain saves energy is via a mixture of conscious and subconscious processing.

Our subconscious mind is our autopilot. It's in charge of 95% of what we do from our body and internal functions to our habits to learned behaviours. These are things we don't have to think about. Also stored within our subconscious mind is our knowledge and experiences we have had to this day. We use those to help us assign meaning and value to events, objects and people. It's why we sometimes judge people before we know them.

For self-preservation, our brains want to operate on auto-pilot as much as possible. The problem is that this is where most of our unhelpful attitudes and habits, those behaviours, opinions and negative thoughts come from. These are the very things that stop us from achieving what we want.

It's our subconscious minds that act as a barrier to positive thinking and true control over our own thoughts and feelings.

It's the power of your subconscious mind that tells you that you don't have to exercise today because you've been to the gym twice this week already. Our subconscious mind is the part of the brain that tells us that we're not experienced, likeable, good, fit, handsome, beautiful, connected, educated, clever or worthy enough to achieve our goals. Our subconscious mind directly affects our mental, emotional and physical well-being.

To stop negative thoughts from holding you back, you need to rewire your subconscious mind.

Your conscious mind is key to reprogramming your own thought patterns and improving your everyday life.

As Brian Tracy says, "your conscious mind can be thought of as the gardener, planting seeds, your subconscious mind can be thought of as the garden, or fertile soil, in which the seeds germinate and grow." So, your conscious mind (sometimes called the objective mind) is in charge while your subconscious mind obeys.

How syncing your subconscious and conscious minds improves your daily life and future prospects

You can take real control of your life, move forward, enjoy success and become much happier by changing your subconscious mind and the assumptions it operates under.

Let's consider an example.

At the moment, you might get out of bed at 7 in the morning. It's been your routine for years and years.

How difficult is it to change it. Let's say you decided that you wanted to get fit and healthy.

Your conscious mind tells you you should get up at 5.30. You'll walk to work. You'll iron your clothes the night before so you're prepped first thing. You'll take in a healthy packed lunch you prepared in the evening rather than go out to Greggs in the morning for a bacon button and the chippy for a kebab wrap at lunch.

Sounds great but, at 8pm in the evening, you realise that an entire new series of your favourite program has dropped on BBC iPlayer. You binge-watch it until 3 in the morning with a few beers and a bag of Doritos in hand.

The alarm goes off at 5.30 in the morning as your conscious mind instructed you to do. But, because you stayed up late, you're knackered and you decide to set your alarm for 7am again. You never got around to ironing your shirt, you never made your packed lunch, and you jump in the car to go to work.

Your subconscious mind wins. You feel a tinge of regret in the morning that you didn't follow through on your plans and your subconscious mind tells you that it was a pipe dream because it was just too much hassle. Nothing changed despite your fleeting good intentions.

Three specific aspects of your life you can change to give your conscious mind the power

Within you is the most awesome power to achieve whatever you want. It's much easier to take the road you're used to travelling though.

At the start of your journey, replacing negative thoughts with positive ones will feel seemingly impossible. It requires a lot of effort but, when you get on top of it, your life will be radically improved.

Taking the following three steps will work wonders:

1. Tell yourself that you are worthy

The true healing power of subconscious mind training is that it addresses the reasons we have negative thoughts and behaviours in the first place.

It takes time and practice to recite to yourself the positive affirmations that you are worthy of what you desire but, with each affirmation, you begin the progress of reprogramming your mind and harnessing the unbelievable power of your conscious mind.

2. Match your words with actions

If you say to yourself that you're going to do something, do it. There can be a lag in the early days of your reprogramming to match words with actions. That's because of the incredible force and power of your subconscious mind.

Moving out of your comfort zone will cause some discomfort because you'll be demanding more of yourself all the time.

You may not want to wake up earlier, make a healthy packed lunch, do 10,000 steps in one day or go to bed earlier. But the more you do it, the more you help yourself and take a step closer to the person you've determined you want to be.

3. Be mindful

Writing down your thoughts or regularly meditating helps you understand why you have the thoughts that hold you back. Going through them is key in dismantling the logic that gives them legitimacy to your subconscious mind.

Many clients I work with uncover negative thinking they didn't even know about. This is important as you can't put right that which you don't know is wrong.

Put aside time for mindfulness regularly until you feel that which held you back is no longer part of you.

What happens when you put these three steps to work

You can change your life simply and quickly by applying these three steps. But how can you tell it's working?

  • You'll be positive and you will attract positivity from others. This is the law of attraction and it will help you build better relationships. Tony Robbins states that "whatever you consistently think about and focus upon you move toward."
  • You'll be less risk-averse. The beliefs that you currently have that set your risk tolerance level will slowly be dismantled. You'll then see an increase in your confidence level and feel much more happy moving outside your comfort zone.
  • And you'll be much more self-aware. You'll have better emotional control and you'll notice the amount of negative self-talk decrease dramatically. You'll be able to shift and maintain focus better meaning you get more done to a higher standard.

Using the power of your subconscious mind to improve your life and build your business

I think of myself as quite a spiritual man with his feet firmly planted on the ground. I have always been interested in others and have a people-conscious personality.

When you have a burning desire to achieve a goal and our subconscious mind isn't holding us back, you know what the world will look like when you get to the end destination and you feel excited about it.

You can see a pathway, the stepping stones through time that get you to the destination, this makes your progression a planned progress as opposed to an ethereal dream. When our subconscious can see that path it starts to become real and there will be a shift in motivation, it starts to enable the path as opposed to resist.

You now know the milestones that keep you on the right track and you know daily what you need to do to meet the milestones

You create the right habits and embed the right patterns that give you the greatest possibility of success.

You approach life with absolute certainty. Now you know that your subconscious is a reliable, positive autopilot. Unlike before, today it guides you how to make the most of any given situation on what actions you need to take you closer to achieving your goals.

I have so many examples of this from being a business coach.

First, people who won’t pay for a coach who "knows just a little bit more than they do."

I keep them accountable and help them reinforce the changes they are making in themselves, and they start to see just what it is they didn't believe they could do before. Results compound into bigger achievements. They soon feel a bit silly for being hesitant in taking action!

They never believed they would be able to buy a business using debt and seller financing.

They never believed they would grow their business by over 100% YoY and no longer be involved in accounts, fulfilment or marketing activity.

They never believed they could take a concept to a fully funded business within 6 months.

And they never believed they work with hundreds of customers who get value from working with them on a daily basis sharing insights, observations and experiences. They never believed they could build an incredible business, spend time with local causes raising awareness and fundraising as well as building political capital with key local players.

That last one was me by the way as I am a testament to the power of mastering your subconscious mind to achieve my life goals.

For me, the difference between a good and a life-changing self-help or psychological book is how many of the ideas I can put to work in real life.

I recommend the following great, informative books if you want to find out more about the power of your subconscious mind:

  • "The Power of Your Subconscious Mind" by Joseph Murphy. Spiritual man Joseph Murphy, a popular minister of the Church of Divine Science and an important figure in the human potential movement, first released this book in 1963 and it has been re-released many times over, last revised by Ian McMahan.
  • "Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior, a remarkable book by another major figure Leonard Mlodinow which sold millions.
  • Joseph Murphy's classic book "How to Unleash the Power of Your Subconscious Mind: A 52-week Guide" has stood the test of time also. Joseph Murphy explains his route to financial wealth in "Your Infinite Power to Be Rich".

You should also seek out books by Dale Carnegie, Bob Proctor, Earl Nightingale, James Allen, Louise Hay, Napoleon Hill, Norman Vincent Peale, Tony Robbins and Zig Ziglar and other contemporary motivational writers in the self-help space. Titles are available from Amazon, Hay House and other stockists.

Some of the most helpful books have been written from a religious perspective and frequently reference prayer therapy, bible verses, universal mind, biblical quotes, scientific prayer and the idea id divine knowledge. If you are an atheist or agnostic like me, I appeal to you not to dismiss the concepts in these books because of that and find different frames of reference to harness the power of your subconscious mind.
